Oregon Electrician License Application Process

In order to apply for a license, the following prerequisites have to be met:

– You must complete all required application forms for the license or certification type you wish to acquire.

-You must pay the appropriate fee.

– You must send application documents (if a registration form and photo identification are required, the form and photo should be included) with fee to:

– The Building Codes Division will review your application. Note that incomplete applications may be returned and fee(s) forfeited.

– If an application is complete, it will be approved or denied based upon your reported experience and/or education.

– If your application is denied, you will be notified of appeal rights and process.

– If an examination is required, you will be sent a letter authorizing examination, the examination locations and contact information. Passing grade is 75% for all examinations.

– If no examination is required, you will be sent either a registration form and photo identification instructions (if appropriate), or a license or certificate.

– If you take the examination and fail, you may reapply and retest:

  • OIC – Anytime
  • All other license and certifications – 30 days after each failure

Note that this does not apply to Master Builder Certificate of Competency.

– After passing the exam and paying all fees, the Building Codes Division will process and mail you the license or certificate.

Oregon Electrical Licensing Examination Process

In case an examination is required for your license, you may choose a testing location on your application. The locations can be found here.

When your application is approved, you will receive a “Letter of Authorization” and the examination materials to the testing location you selected from the BCD.

The Letter of Authorization will include the telephone contact number for you to call to schedule your examination. Note that your are solely responsible for scheduling the examination date and time with the testing location.

The examination must be taken within 60 days of the date of the Letter of Authorization.

At the testing location, you will have to provide both your Letter of Authorization and photo identification.

Additionally, you will have to bring your own pencils and calculators. In case you need a calculator, it must be a silent, non-programmable, non-printing calculator. Scratch paper is provided in your test packet.

The examination results will not be announced by the testing location. Instead, the BCD, after grading, will send you the results by mail. Please allow two weeks to receive your results.

Once you pass all required examinations, and pay all required fees, the division will mail your license to you.

Oregon Electrical License Renewal Process

You are eligible to renew your license upon its expiration if:

  • You comply with all statutes and rules covering that license
  • You comply with all continuing education requirements (if any)
  • You pay the appropriate renewal fee

If you fail to follow the above listed guidelines on or before the license expiration date, you may be required to reapply for a new license.

Oregon Electrical Contractor License

An electrical contractor license is a specialized license allowing a company to engage in the business of making electrical installations. This license is required in addition to licensing and bonding required by the Construction Contractors Board.

Oregon Electrical Contractor, Limited Maintenance Specialty HVAC (LHR) License

A limited maintenance specialty contractor-HVAC/R (Heating, Ventilating, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration) may maintain, service, repair or replace commercial and industrial electrical products that use fuel or other forms of energy to produce heat, power, refrigeration or air conditioning;

An LHR Contractor shall install, maintain or repair 100 volt-ampere or less thermostat or associated control wiring beyond the electrical product in other than a one- or two-family dwelling only when the contractor employs one or more of the following to perform the work:

  1. General journeyman electrician
  2. General supervising electrician
  3. Limited Energy technician class A
  4. Limited Energy technician class B

A holder of this license may direct, supervise, and engage in electrical work related to the testing repair, service, maintenance, installation or replacement of new or existing pump equipment for potable or irrigation water systems, sump pumps, effluent pumps and ground water pumps on residential and agricultural property. He also may make repairs or perform work on them without further license. Installations under this license shall be limited to branch circuit wiring provided from the load side of a disconnect means external to panel boards.

A limited renewable energy contractor must employ at least one full-time renewable energy technician and engages in the business of or makes the limited types of renewable energy electrical installations limited to 25 kva and 600 volts nominal or less, specified in ORS 479.630(17). Limited types of electrical installations include: install, maintain, replace, or repair electrical wiring and electrical products. A restricted energy contractor is limited to HVAC activities.
