Texas Electrician Career Path

In general, in order to become an electrician in Texas, the first step is to get your high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalent. You may then enroll in an apprenticeship program.

As an apprentice, you will work under a master electrician in order to qualify for the state apprentice license. It is preferable to choose an apprenticeship program that also features some classroom training. Apprentices usually train in the classroom 1 day per week for a few semesters. Make sure to opt for a program that focuses on the type of work you would like to do in the future. Keep in mind that commercial, residential and industrial wiring are significantly different.

After working for 4 to 5 years as an electrical apprentice and being under the supervision of a licensed master electrician for at least 4,000 hours of practice, you will then be able to move on to your next license level. You can then apply to become a journeyman electrician or a residential wireman.

After gaining even more experience, you will have the option to become a master electrician once you have achieved 12,000 hours of supervised electrical work. You must also be a journeyman electrician for at least 2 years.
